Q: "Why be organized?"

A: You Will Feel More In Control...

...reducing the stress that unchecked clutter in your home or office produces.

You will have more room - A reorganization of almost any drawer, closet, room or office produces more space even if you eliminate nothing.

You will be able to find something when you want it - saving endless time spent looking for keys, files, telephone numbers, or any other item which seems to disappear just when we need it the most.

You will be making a favorable impression - on the people around you. Your colleagues, clients, friends and family will admire your ability to be on time, fulfill your commitments and maintain order.

You will save money - by not having to buy a second of something because you couldn't find, or didn't remember you had, the first. You won't be charged for those missed appointments either.

Q: Why remove clutter?

A: Clutter Is The Excess Stuff In Our Lives

It takes up space on our tables and counters and in our closets, attics, basements, drawers, nooks and crannies. We move it, rearrange it, clean around it. Clutter is the magazines we plan to sort through, the broken toys, the games with missing pieces, the clothes we hope to fit into someday. It's the appliances we don't use or that need fixing, the ornaments we don't really like and the unfinished projects.

Clutter is a burden on our minds because we know it's there. We plan to get to it someday. That day has come! Seize it! FREE YOURSELF FROM YOUR STUFF! To de-clutter and simplify your home is to surround yourself with only the things you love, need and want. Get rid of everything else!

Q: "How is getting organized going to make a difference in my life?"

A: The Benefits Of Getting Organized

Getting organized contributes to a sense of well being. It increases efficiency and productivity. It lowers stress and helps individuals find more time and energy for the things that matter most. It makes a home or office appear more spacious and inviting.

Lack of organization is draining, making it difficult to focus and affecting productivity. Clutter interferes with our sense of tranquility and the smooth flow of energy in the space. This contributes to lethargy and procrastination. Disorganization can cause feelings of frustration, anxiety and can even lead to depression. It makes a space seem small and inefficient.

Q: "Do you have some tips for keeping organized?"

A: Brenda's Five Best Tips for Decluttering and Destressing Your Life

(Brenda Borenstein, the owner of Organized Zone Inc., and the mother of two young boys use the following strategies daily.)

1. Control Paper Chaos
Handle papers and mail only once; this saves you time and space. Recycle envelopes immediately. Sort mail and papers into four categories and follow the AFPF rule:
* Act on it
* File it
* Purge it
* Forward it

2. Get Rid of Visual Clutter
Take a good hard look at your office and home. Ask yourself which things do not belong and decide immediately what to do with them. For example, if you have extra coffee cups in the kitchen that you never use, give them to a charity. Outdated manuals, books, research materials and calendars should be recycled.

3. Use Your Delete Button
Lighten up your computer's workload. When viewing your e-mail, follow the A-B rules.
A - Read, reply, forward.
B - File or delete; don't let mail sit in your in-box.
Make Friday your garbage day and empty your deleted e-mails weekly.

4. Keep a List
If you can't sleep because you're tossing and turning and worrying about all of the things you have to do in the morning, take action. Before you leave work, make a list of everything you need to do the next day and prioritize in terms of importance. The next morning, review your list before you start your day and cross off each item as you deal with it.

5. Set Mini Goals
Before tackling a large project, break it down into a list of steps you need to take to complete it. Finish each step before moving on to the next. You'll be amazed at how much more quickly your project will be completed.

For example, everyone has photos lying around in drawers.

  • Step 1: start with the most recent photos and work backwards, deciding which photos you what to keep.
  • Step 2: throw away any blurry, out-of-focus photos, and any duplicates you don't want to pass on to family or friends.
  • Step 3: group the keepers in albums or photo boxes.
  • Step 4: use labels underneath the photos to write dates, names, events. Still feeling overwhelmed? Enlist help from other family members.
