Collections

Take note all amateur, sentimental and professional collectors.  We gotta talk.

It really doesn’t matter what you collect. However, where you store or showcase your collection can be a problem.  Especially if you tire of the collection… then what?

I have a client who collected anything to do with Pigs.  Friends and relatives thoughtfully added to her pig collectables on many occasions.  With her limited display areas and her abundance of items, her space quickly turned into a pigpen.

Funny enough after years of collecting, she didn’t even like pigs anymore.  She had a constant headache, looking at the mess. But, felt guilty getting rid of them.  Her thinking was if she had friends or relatives come for a visit, the items they gave her should be out for display.

I am thankful that with reasoning, she finally understands, her company is coming to visit her not those items.  Plus, it had been years since she would invite anyone over because her home was so cluttered.  Things were put into perspective and she was ready to let go and she did.

When you decide, or fall into a collection you must determine where your items will be stored.  And if the collection exceeds the space allotted, you have to reassess, edit, move or stop collecting.  Enough is enough.

Collectors often lose interest of a collection and start another one.  They may decide its dated, meaningless, juvenile or just want to head into a new direction. The fact is, they just like collecting, its fun a fun hobby and makes them feel good at the time.  The result of an expired or tired collection often ends up on the “Wall of Shame” or boxed in the spare bedroom for years.  However it could be worse, it could be a tattoo.

If you do not love dusting, be sure to have a glassed in curio cabinet or something incased free of dust.

When displaying your items, remember less is more. The fewer pieces you display the more visible they will be.  Enjoy them.
